The film’s characters – Peter Lugovoy, Marianna Stankevich, Alexander Pereverzev, Vladlen Khromov, Olga Klenovskaya and Valentin Kozyrev – were born during the war, they are young, full of hope and faith in their happy future. Of course, everyone has their own dreams: a simple worker from Rostov Lugovaya, having accidentally met Marianna on an excursion to Peterhof, dreams that one day he will achieve her love. A journalism student, a girl from a “decent family” Marianne dreams of becoming a famous journalist, and she is also unrequitedly in love with international journalist Alexander Pereverzev. Promising young physicist Vladlen Khromov dreams of space – and of the young beauty Marianna. Maximalist Klenovskaya, a student at the Economic Institute, dreams of an ideal world where there is no place for lies, greed and meanness. And Valentin Kozyrev aspires to become an outstanding pianist, but circumstances force him to try the “profession” of a pickpocket. Years and decades pass… Lugovoy, who promised himself that he would achieve everything in his life for Marianne’s sake, chooses a risky and deadly path – to become a shopkeeper. In the late 60s, together with his friends, he organized a sewing workshop, and already in the 70s his workshop “empire” grew to the scale of the country. But all this does not lead him to his cherished goal – Marianna, who married the physicist Khromov, is still in love with her idol Alexander Pereverzev… Olga Klenovskaya, having survived her father’s arrest, decides to go to work at the OBKhSS, and soon finds herself in Rostov – she successfully solves cases related to the theft of socialist property, but she still can’t get close to her main enemy, the shopkeeper Lugovoi. And the failed pickpocket Kozyrev, having stumbled more than once, is increasingly immersed in the criminal environment…

The events of the film cover the period from 1963 to 1993. The country and the lives of its citizens will change – from the Khrushchev “thaw” to the Brezhnev “stagnation”, from Gorbachev’s “perestroika” to the shooting of the White House… And the characters of the film will change along with the country. Fate will constantly push them against each other, they will go through many trials, through love and hate, through friendship and betrayal, but each of them will believe that someday his personal, happy tomorrow will come…
